One buys you today. The other buys you next year.

The comparison every owner runs before spending, usually with somebody selling one of the two answering it.

The difference in one line

Ads put you at the top of a page you have not earned, for as long as you keep paying. Search earns the position and keeps it after the spending stops.

Everything else is detail, and most arguments about the two are really arguments about which of those two problems you have this quarter.

When paying is clearly right

When you need customers before search could possibly deliver them. A new business, a seasonal window, a location opening next month.

Also when what you sell is urgent. Somebody with a burst pipe is not comparing five results, and being first for that minute is worth more than being respected for a year.

When it is clearly wrong

When the page they land on cannot convert them. Paying to send strangers to a site with no prices, no address and a form nobody has tested is buying traffic to prove a point.

Also when the budget is small enough that the money disappears before anybody learns anything from it. A budget that cannot survive a fortnight of testing teaches you nothing.

The part nobody mentions

They are not really alternatives. Ads reveal, in weeks, which words actually bring people who buy, and that is the most expensive thing to learn any other way.

Run for a month, read honestly, they tell you what the slower work should aim at. That is worth the money even if you never advertise again.

What we would do with a small budget

Fix the page first, because both routes end there. Then advertise narrowly, on the few words closest to a purchase, and read what comes back.

Then spend the slow work on whatever the ads proved people want. The order matters more than the split.

Questions worth asking

Can we do both at once?

Yes, and it is often the right answer, but only after the page they arrive on is worth arriving at. Doing both badly costs twice and teaches you half as much.

Do ads help our normal rankings?

No. Paying does not move the unpaid results, and Google has said so repeatedly. What ads do is tell you which words are worth the slower effort, which is a different kind of help and a real one.

What about Meta ads instead?

Different job. Search catches somebody already looking for you. Meta puts you in front of somebody who was not looking, which suits things people buy on sight and suits emergency plumbing very badly.

How small is too small a budget?

When a single click costs a noticeable share of the daily spend, you are not running a campaign, you are buying a few visitors. At that point the money does more on the site itself.

If we stop advertising, do we lose everything?

You lose the traffic immediately, which is the honest cost of renting the position. What you keep is what you learned and whatever the slower work built in the meantime, which is the argument for doing both.
