Weeks for one half of it, months for the other.

The listing can move inside a fortnight. The results beneath it take the better part of a year. One number covering both is a guess.

The quick half

A properly finished Google Business Profile can change what you see inside a fortnight, sometimes sooner. Not because of any trick, but because most rivals stopped a third of the way through theirs.

That is precisely why it goes first. It is cheap, it is fast, and the field is weak.

The slow half

Appearing in the ordinary results means being weighed against everybody who has been publishing for longer. Six to twelve months is the honest range for a new site chasing a phrase worth money.

The first movement inside that usually arrives around week eight and looks like nothing much: a few more phrases you show up for, lower down than you would like.

What one quarter looked like

Iglisi Watch began with no site at all. Across the quarter that followed, search delivered 560 clicks at an average position of 8.4 and a click rate of 1%.

The closing four weeks carried more of that than the opening eight, which is the shape of this work: flat, flat, then a slope.

When to stop paying somebody

If nothing has moved by the fourth month, something is wrong and it should be named out loud rather than waited out. Usually it is that the pages answer no question anybody actually types.

A month in which nothing improved gets reported as a month in which nothing improved. A report that is good news every single time has stopped being a report.

Questions worth asking

Can anybody guarantee first place?

No, and the ones who do are counting on you not checking afterwards. Nobody outside Google sets the order, and anybody who genuinely could would not be selling it at these prices.

Why does the slow half take so long?

Because the comparison is with sites that have existed longer and been linked to more often, and that comparison is the entire mechanism. There is no version of it that resolves inside a fortnight.

Is there anything quicker?

The listing, and paid ads. Ads work the day they are switched on and stop the day they are switched off, which makes them useful for covering the gap while the slower work builds underneath.

Am I paying every month for a year?

Not necessarily. A good deal of this is one job that stays done: the structure, the pages, the listing. What genuinely recurs is a great deal smaller than most agencies invoice for.

My competitor has done this for years. Then what?

Then you do not take their best phrase this year. You take the ten they never wrote a page for, which is generally where the customers were anyway.
