In a city this size, the map is not part of the result. It is the result.

For a business whose customers are within a few kilometres of the door.

What the screen actually shows

Type a trade and this city into a phone and count what appears above the ordinary results. A map, then three businesses. Whatever sits underneath is read by a minority of people and almost none of them in a hurry.

So the honest goal here is one of those three places, and everything else is either a route to it or a distraction from it.

What decides which three

How near you are to whoever is searching, which you cannot change. How complete your profile is, which you can finish this week. And what other people have said about you, which you can start today and most of your rivals never have.

Two of the three inputs are entirely inside your control and neither requires a website change. That is the part nobody selling monthly retainers leads with.

The pond is shallow enough to see the bottom

Open the profiles of the businesses currently above you. Count the photographs, read the description, look at whether the services are listed individually or not at all.

In this city that exercise usually ends with the same conclusion: the business winning is not doing something clever, it is the only one that filled the form in.

What it looked like from zero

A watch shop here began in May with no website and no listing worth the name. The chart on our homepage is its Search Console export, not a drawing, and the case page says which parts were the listing and which were the site.

What it does not show is a shortcut, because there was not one. It shows the ordinary work done in order.

What this will not do

It will not make a shop busy in a week, and it will not help at all if the thing people find is a phone number nobody answers.

It also will not save a business whose problem is the offer. We have said that to people who came here to buy search, and we would rather say it again than take the money.

Questions worth asking

How many reviews do I need to be in the three?

Fewer than you fear, because the bar is set by whoever is already there rather than by a number. Look at the current three, count theirs, and you have your target.

Does my website matter if the map decides it?

It matters for the decision rather than the position. Somebody picks you off the map and then checks whether you look real, and that check happens on your site or on nothing.

I am not in the centre. Is that fatal?

No, because there is no single centre point that Google measures from. It measures from wherever the person searching is standing, so being near your own customers matters more than being near the middle of town.

Can I do this without hiring anybody?

The profile and the reviews, yes, and those are the two that move first. What is harder alone is knowing which of the ordinary things to do next when the obvious ones are done.

What if my customers are visitors rather than locals?

Then the search happens in another language and often before they arrive, which changes what the pages have to say but not how the map works. It is worth saying out loud in the first conversation.
