Starting from nothing is a position, not a disadvantage.
Everything here was done for a shop that had no website in May, so the order is the one that was actually used.
Week one is the listing, not the website
The map profile is free, it is the fastest thing to move, and most of your competitors have filled in about a third of theirs. That gap is the cheapest advantage available to anybody starting today.
Categories, every service named, real hours, photographs of the actual place, and the questions people ring to ask, answered there.
Then write the pages nobody else bothered with
Not a homepage that says welcome. A page per thing you sell, named the way a customer would name it, in the language they would use.
Being new helps here: there is nothing to undo, no old structure to work around, and no argument about whose page has to change.
Ask for reviews from the first customers you get
The first handful matter more than any later handful, because zero to five is a bigger change than twenty to twenty five. The moment to ask is while they are still standing there saying it.
Expect the shape, not a straight line
A watch shop here had no site in May. Across the following quarter search brought it 560 clicks at an average position of 8.4, which is the foot of the first page rather than the top.
The closing weeks of that quarter carried more than the opening ones. Flat, flat, then a slope, and knowing that in advance is what stops people giving up in week six.
What not to buy in the first months
Links from anybody selling them, a monthly retainer for a site with four pages, or a guarantee of first place. None of the three survives contact with how this actually works.
Questions worth asking
Is a new domain a disadvantage?
Mildly, and less than people fear. What matters is that nothing about it is yet established, which is the same for every new business. It is a slower start, not a penalty.
Should I buy an old domain instead?
No. An old domain carries whatever it did before, and that is as often a liability as an asset. You would be buying somebody else's history without being able to read it properly.
How much should a new business spend on this?
Start with the free half and see what it does. Anybody asking a new business for a large monthly figure before the listing is finished is selling before diagnosing.
What if I have no customers to ask for reviews?
Then that is the first job, and it is not a search problem. Search brings people who are already looking; it cannot create demand that does not exist yet.
Can I do the first steps myself?
Yes, and you should. The listing is an afternoon and nobody needs to be paid for it. Bring somebody in when the writing and the structure start costing more time than they are worth to you.
